A dispute happens when your client asks their card issuer or bank to reverse a payment. Stripe pulls the funds from your balance while the dispute is reviewed, so it is important to respond quickly.
When a dispute is opened
- You receive an email from CollegePlannerPro right away. Disputes have a response deadline set by the card network.
- The invoice status doesn't change yet.
Respond to the dispute
- Go to the Stripe Payments dashboard and open the Disputes list.
- Click the dispute to open it.
- Accept the dispute, or submit evidence such as the signed agreement, the invoice, and records of services delivered.
How the invoice updates
| Dispute stage | Invoice in CollegePlannerPro |
|---|---|
| Dispute opened | No change; you're emailed |
| Funds withdrawn from your balance | Returns to unpaid; negative payment added |
| You win and funds are reinstated | Returns to Paid; positive payment added |
| You lose or accept | Stays unpaid |
Fees: Stripe charges a dispute fee, which is returned if you win. See Stripe's pricing page for the current amount.
Tip: Clear payment terms on every invoice and a signed client agreement are your best evidence.
